Join Us in An Artist’s Process during your Four Days at Sea:
Dear Barcelona, Morocco and
Canary Island Hooking and Art Enthusiasts,
Imagine an adventure of creating colour and texture
with a group of hooking enthusiasts from all genres of this fibre art form.
Whether this will be your first venture into the world of rug hooking or you
are a master hooker, this week of optional workshops and sharing sessions will
offer opportunities for you to learn how artists become inspired and how
artists see and create personal meaning.
You can be certain that Susie and Heather are most
interested in YOUR work and will
support your artist’s process. We believe that how you hook and make your art
with fibre is as individual as we are human. They aim to make you giddy with
possibility.
You are invited to join us as we engage in the visual
explorations that deepen and challenge the artist’s process. We will share stories
and tricks of the craft that support the artist from the original inspiration
to the finished rug. You may join us for as many workshops as you like, hook
with others or simply bask in the scenery and culture.
What you can expect
Within the context of the daily morning workshops and the afternoon hook-ins and sharing sessions you will experience…
- Optional workshops in dynamic composition and tricks in design for those who are afraid to draw
- Show and tell sessions
- Exercises to support you in making the connection between your story and your art in order to deepen the meaning of your work
- Short sessions connecting our visual ideas with the principles and elements of design, particularly value, texture and colour
- One-on-one time with Susie and/or Heather
- An opportunity to learn the “Eaton Edge” (If you are interested, please bring binding, a needle and thread.)
- Demonstration of marrying colour and dying wool and recipes
- A balance of rejuvenation, humour, solitude and beauty

Susie
Stephenson
Susie is a primitive folk artist. Many of her rugs tell stories of beloved animals and pets or the many houses she has lived in. She loves experimenting with colour and texture for the sky and creating water that appears to be moving.
Susie is a primitive folk artist. Many of her rugs tell stories of beloved animals and pets or the many houses she has lived in. She loves experimenting with colour and texture for the sky and creating water that appears to be moving.
Each of her rugs is an original, unique in colour and design and hooked exclusively from recycled clothing. Susie says, “I’ve never worked from patterns or prints. I try to record my memories and bring the world around me into my designs and colours by hooking special times, places and animals.” As a rug hooker, Susie expresses, without inhibition, the world around her in a simple and real way.
Susie lived in Nova Scotia for fifteen years and now lives in Edgecomb, Maine. Maritime themes of ships, water, mermaids and the simple life of farming and fishing are evident in her work. Susie’s book, Designing and Hooking Primitive Rugs will unleash your creative side and encourages you to let imagination be your guide.

The Optional Land Pre-cruise land excursion:
In Barcelona,
you will stay in a beautiful 4-star hotel in the Gothic Quarter near the
Old Town, where the stunning Cathedral is located, and the famous Boqueria
Market. Las Ramblas is within walking distance. Of course, we have included a
tour of Artistic Barcelona where you will see the masterful works of Antonio
Gaudi, such as La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera and Casa Batllo. You will
also visit Parc Guell, a large garden park where this genius strove to achieve
the perfect integration of architectual elements in nature. It was declared an
artistic monument and a human heritage site by UNESCO. This tour ends near
The Picasso Museum, which displays works from his blue and pink periods.
In
Cadaques, you will stay in a small hotel (3-stars) on a beach, just a
5-minute stroll from the town centre. Salvador Dali's summer home was in
Cadaques and you can walk to his home-museum in just 20 minutes. Figueres, home
to Dali's theatre-museum is 45-minutes' drive away. Surrounded by the
beautifull Cap de Creus Nature Reserve, Cadaques is a 50-minute drive from the
French border.
